Non-meat eaters were reportedly smoked into thinking their patties from a Burger King location were 100-percent plant-based.
According to Eater New York, the Burger King restaurant at 736 Broadway in Brooklyn has been substituting regular ‘Whoppers’ for the new meat-free ‘Impossible Whopper’ for weeks, telling Seamless drivers to remind delivery customers that the patties were swapped. Unfortunately, some drivers neglected to mention this crucial detail to consumers.
The ‘Impossible Burger’ features Impossible Foods’ popular vegan patty, which is only available in certain cities. NYC isn’t in this list, but the option to order the sandwich was still visible to Seamless users residing near the 736 Broadway branch.
Customers likely consumed the burgers in their entirety without noticing the mistake, as the Impossible patty is famed for closely replicating real beef in appearance, taste, texture, and sizzle. It even “bleeds” like actual meat. Additionally, both versions of ‘Whoppers’ are flame-grilled.
The revelation was made by a vegetarian Williamsburg patron, who asked to remain anonymous. The man told Eater that he only discovered he was chowing down real meat after visiting the actual store and being told that it did not serve the item.
The listing, which was up since “at least” 20 May, was pulled on Tuesday. A Burger King spokesperson detailed to The Takeout that the menu item was made available “due to a technology error.”
“One of our franchisees incorrectly listed the ‘Impossible Whopper’ as… available at some New York-area restaurants through two third-party delivery platforms,” the representative said.
Burger King also apologized for the error, and urged concerned NYC-based customers who managed to order the ‘Impossible Whopper’ to call 866-394-2493.
As for the Williamsburg customer who reported the issue, he related that the regular ‘Whopper’ tasted 80-percent like real beef, and was “s**ttier than I remember.”
