Rihanna Receives Praise For Deliberately Leaving Model’s Facial Scars Unedited
By Izza Sofia, 11 Jun 2019
Rihanna has once again proven to be committed to defying beauty ideals in the latest campaign of her own fashion brand, Fenty.
When the singer launched Fenty Beauty, the label received tremendous support for its wide range of foundation shades and concealers, pushing other beauty brands to follow suit. Her lingerie line, Savage x Fenty, also features a diverse cast of models including a pregnant woman who strutted down the New York Fashion Week runway.
A recent ad for Fenty—Rihanna’s new luxury fashion line with LVMH—spotlights a Black woman with visible facial scars modeling for fashion jewelry.
Fans who spotted the picture applauded the brand for choosing not to edit out the scars. One Twitter user expressed love for Rihanna and Fenty’s non-retouched imagery, adding that the new ad “touched [her] heart.”
The model in the ad, Aweng Mayen Chuol, first voiced out about her scars back in 2018. She told Dazed and Confused that she was called a “jaguar” or “exotic” for the facial extremities. Chuol said she wished that everybody would look past her scars and remember that she, too, was human despite looking different.
i love that the images used on fenty are not retouched, and that the models skin is not perfect by societal standards pic.twitter.com/8iDQ9BgUz0— Farah | فرح (@xfarahalyx) May 29, 2019
Wow! As a girl with scars, this really touches my heart. I’ve never had any reason to feel less terrible about my scars until seeing this.— Aughra Ptolemy (@Human47118627) May 29, 2019
