This gun might just be the most famous weapon ever sold in art history.
The antique pistol, which is believed to be used by Vincent van Gogh to shoot himself, is sold at an auction in Paris for €130,000 (US$148,142).
The unknown bidder bought the Lefaucheux revolver—which has a rusty casing and a missing curved handle from AuctionArt Paris, was sold twice the price estimated by experts. Auctioneer Gregoire Veyres described it as an “emblematic piece” and this “object of death” was part of van Gogh’s suicide.
Van Gogh shot himself in the chest in a field in 1890 when he was only 37 years of age.
The Dutch artist was known to suffer deep depression and psychosis, which he might have incorporated it through his artwork such as The Starry Night and Sunflowers. His shooting incident failed to kill him instantly, and he was nursed by the innkeeper Arthur Ravoux and his daughter Adeline. Before he died, he spent two months creating another 80 paintings. After he died, the search for his gun began, but it was only found in the 1960s.
