Stranger Things 3 kicked off on 4 July, and somehow, the show’s creators managed to depict the ‘Mind Flayer’ as more frightening than it was in season two.
This time around, the monster is the true stuff of nightmares, and seems almost impossible to defeat as it only becomes larger and more powerful after usurping its victims. The fearsome beast might leave fans reeling days after binge-watching the show, so they would be surprised to learn that it appears pretty harmless in real life.
The Duffer Brothers, creators of the hit Netflix series, told USA Today that the monster was simply a guy in a suit made out of a “giant beach ball taped to a long pole” and some slime.
The setup was so bizarre, the leading cast kept cracking up when coming face-to-face with the “big scary monster,” the brothers said, adding that the kids had to constantly be reminded to act frightened.
There are also exploding rats in this season, but the Duffer Brothers assured the rodents were simply CGI. Thanks to a larger budget, the show has become more terrifying than ever. “We’re limited only by our own imagination,” said the creators.
‘Billy Hargrove’ the bully (Dacre Montgomery) has also been portrayed even more terrifyingly. Without spoiling anything for you, he’s now a lifeguard at the public pool in ‘Hawkins’, which means he’s often pictured shirtless, looking very shiny as his body gleams under the sun.
But that sheeny appearance isn’t sweat nor water. While the ‘Mind Flayer’ loves the cold, it’s not as pleasing to humans. So instead of spraying the actor with water, the makeup department covered him in lip gloss to appear shiny, as the crew had to film in chilly weather.
“It was really cold,” Montgomery said. “[Gloss] is actually nice, because it keeps you looking sweaty all day every day.”
