London high street fashion label River Island has recalled a total of five apparels, as they contain levels of dangerous chemicals that are high enough to bring about health implications.
A warning recently posted on the label’s website lists five womenswear items that contain “traces of certain chemicals in excess of legally permitted levels within the EU.”
These are: ‘Check Pattern Dress with Faux Pearl Button’ (723969); ‘Check Pattern Sleeveless Blouse with Faux Pearl Button’ (723975); ‘Premium Embellished Tassel Playsuit’ (714210); ‘Sequin Embellished Cami Top’ (720271); ‘Longline Diamante Studded Hoody in Cream’ (725642).
According to the Independent, the first two garments listed feature an excess of cadmium, while the latter three are high in lead content.
The World Health Organization (WHO) describes cadmium as a “human carcinogen” that can have “toxic effects” on the kidney and the skeletal and respiratory systems.
The organization also says that lead is a “toxic metal” that can harm “multiple body systems, including the neurologic, hematologic, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and renal systems.” Children are especially vulnerable to the chemical, and can incur “irreversible neurological damage” even when exposed to relatively small amounts of lead.
River Island clarifies that “the excess quantities of these chemicals could only potentially cause harm if mouthed or ingested, but safety comes first, so we have recalled the products.”
However, it urges customers to stop wearing the pieces immediately and ensure that the items are kept away from children.
The brand adds that its suppliers submitted testing certificates declaring that the chemicals were “within the legal limits,” and that it is now investigating the matter to ensure the issue does not happen again.
Shoppers who own these products can receive a full refund, including postage, by returning them to a store or delivering them to River Island by mail.
