Disney’s ‘Mulan’ Trailer Shows No Sign Of ‘Mushu’, And It’s Infuriating Fans
By Izza Sofia, 09 Jul 2019
Disney finally dropped its first trailer for the live-action remake of Mulan.
The teaser shows the movie’s stunning setting and its heroine, ‘Hua Mulan’, who grew from being a docile child to a reputed warrior in China. The reboot closely follows the original 1998 film, where ‘Mulan’ steps in to replace her sick father to fight against the Northern invaders. She masquerades as a man named ‘Hua Jun’ to bypass a decree by the Emperor of China that requires one man from each family to serve in the Imperial Army.
The trailer, however, has sparked a debate as it doesn’t feature ‘General Li Shang’ nor any musical numbers. On top of that, the dragon ‘Mushu’, voiced by Eddie Murphy in the 1998 film, is also missing from the clip.
The absence of the witty dragon has fans feeling disappointed, with many demanding that Disney include the important character in the film. One appalled Twitter user even declared, “Show us ‘Mushu’, cowards!”
A few internet users, though, came to the movie’s defense, appreciating the new direction Disney is adopting for the new film.
How you gonna remake Mulan and not include Mushu the Dragon? pic.twitter.com/TBa5A01dsk— Derek (@DjSouza95) July 7, 2019
DISNEY: THERE'S NO MUSICALS, SHANG AND MUSHU IN THE MULAN LIVE ACTION— Buh-Leh-Sy (@Blessyvilized) July 7, 2019
Dear @DisneyStudios: Your #Mulan movie looks truly dazzling! But you can have my money once you show me the Mushu! Mulan & Mushu are like Pinocchio & Jiminy Cricket, so do Mushu! Also: (SPOILERS!) Please keep the part when Mulan throws her shoe at Shan Yu. Signed, A Demanding Fan https://t.co/qhvfdaEq5f— KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) July 7, 2019
me: i loved the comedy mushu brought to the original #mulan but i would rather watch a story that grounds itself into the chatacters historical and cultural details while still giving fun familiar nods to the original disney property-— William Yu (@its_willyu) July 7, 2019
Good teaser. I’m fine with no Mushu and no songs. Don’t people complain about their live-action remakes just copying the animated versions? Looks like they will be changing things up a lot here. https://t.co/MrQWAD9fCn— Eric Goldman (@TheEricGoldman) July 7, 2019
Listen, if we could forgive the live-action Cinderella for not having music & talking mice with clothes, then we can forgive Mulan for not having Mushu. Cinderella was still fantastic. #Mulan pic.twitter.com/BJtfxnnAyr— Laura (@lsirikul) July 7, 2019
Hua Mulan’s story dates to as early as 386 AD frm a folk song & later a transcription in the 6th century. Disney’s live action film is attempting to honor the OG version for Western & Eastern (China) audiences. There is no Mushu or Li Shang in the original so please, shut up! https://t.co/IA4D0uudpJ— Cindy PikaPika Chu (@iamcindychu) July 7, 2019
