Pixar’s Toy Story franchise has gotten bigger and better since its inception in 1994. Despite the incredible visuals and plot of Toy Story 4, some parents aren’t completely impressed by the nostalgic film.
Nearly 13,000 people have signed a petition on pro-family platform One Million Moms calling for the boycott of Toy Story 4 over a “dangerous” gay scene.
The snippet depicts ‘Bonnie’, the new owner of ‘Woody’, on her first day of kindergarten. As she is being dropped off, viewers are offered a glimpse of two women dropping off a young girl. They later return to pick her up.
While subtle, critics say the “blink and you will miss” scene was deliberately kept that way to “desensitize children” about the LGBTQ+ community. “But it is obvious that the child has two mothers, and they are parenting together.”
The fleeting moment was deemed even more “dangerous” by the parents as the “subtle but obvious promotion of the LGBTQ lifestyle” could “blindside” young viewers. They also feared that LGBTQ+ views would be normalized through such short bursts of exposure on children.
“Toy Story 4 is the last place parents would expect their children to be confronted with content regarding sexual orientation,” the campaigners claim. “Issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon. It is extremely common yet unnecessary.”
One Million Moms is owned by the American Family Association, and advocates for entertainment content to be portrayed in family-friendly ways.
It took Pixar between 60 and 160 hours to render each frame from Toy Story 4, so you can imagine how important featuring the two moms was for the film’s producers.
