Think of the name Bob Ross, and his larger-than-life curls come to mind. However, the big hair sported by the late painter was not something he was born with. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Ross’ longtime business partner and closest friend, Annette Kowalski, revealed in an interview with NPR in 2016 that his hair was actually straight. Fresh out of the Air Force, the then-unknown painter was struggling to make ends meet, so he decided to get a perm to save himself money in the long term.
“So he let his hair grow… got a perm, and decided he would never need a haircut again,” she said.
The hairstyle soon became a huge part of his branding, and was even in the logo of Bob Ross, Inc. And while Ross is known to have been brimming with positivity, the sad thing is he hated the perm.
The fact that he could “never, ever, ever change” the look bugged him, and he unfortunately “got tired of that curly hair,” Kowalski shared.
Ross’ former business partner also recently made known where all 1,143 “long-lost” paintings created by the artist for The Joy of Painting were hidden, and divulged why the artworks can never be sold.
