Pampers Invents Smart Diapers That Monitor Babies’ Sleep & Pee Activities
By Yimin Huang, 26 Jul 2019

Diaper company Pampers has partnered health software platform Verily, a sister company of Google, to produce nappies that inform parents when they have to be changed. The high-tech wear, called ‘Lumi’, also produces data about babies’ sleep routines.
This is made possible by an accompanying activity sensor, a video monitor with two-way audio, and an app that tracks the data, as reported by Dezeen. The sensor is connected to the front of the diaper in order to transfer information to the app.
The technology also detects whether a diaper is wet from pee, as well as the extent of its wetness. Additionally, it records how long a baby has been sleeping for.
Pampers has specified that the importance of technology is to “simplify” and “connect” people’s lives, and hopes to extend it to parenthood.
The video monitor that comes with the entire ‘Lumi’ bundle allows parents to oversee their babies’ activities, and the audio system enables them to both listen and speak to the infants. Temperature and humidity are also measured to ensure a child is in a comfortable state.
This first-of-its-kind high-tech diaper system will be rolled out in the United States this fall, before it becomes available overseas.
