Back in 2017, Kim Sánchez, the owner of Long Beach restaurant Sweet Dixie Kitchen, was spotted entering her establishment with bags of Popeyes’ fried chicken, which she later plated with waffles.
The brunch spot quickly made headlines, but Popeyes now assures that there’s no animosity between the two businesses.
In fact, the fast food chain has decided to mark a milestone at Sweet Dixie Kitchen. Popeyes’ first-ever chicken sandwich to launch in the US, the ‘Popeyes Chicken Sandwich’, will first roll out to Sweet Dixie Kitchen before even reaching its own outlets.
Sánchez was surprised about being approached by the fried chicken giant, and was certain that she was in legal trouble.
“To be honest, I thought they were calling to sue me,” the restaurant owner recalls.
She was even roped into starring in Popeyes’ latest commercial as part of a creative campaign by GUT, an independent advertising agency founded by ex-David co-founders Anselmo Ramos and Gastón Bigio.
The sandwich will be “legally available” at Sweet Dixie Kitchen for US$3.99 on 8 and 9 August before making its national debut at Popeyes restaurants on 12 August. Popeyes says the addition is its “biggest product launch” in 30 years.
According to the chain, the new menu item entails a “delicious buttermilk battered and hand-breaded white meat chicken filet” in a “buttery, toasted brioche bun” with barrel-cured pickles and a choice of mayo or spicy Cajun spread.
