A dating website has been caught red-handed by a police officer, who claims it stole his selfie to advertise its services.
David Guzman from the Golden Beach Police Department in Florida is suing NSI Holdings—which owns dating platforms Cupid and Uniform Dating—for purportedly grabbing a photo from his private Facebook account to run an advert for “men and women in uniform, and those who admire them,” according to a report by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
The photo describes the subject as a 33-year-old man looking for love, and is accompanied with the caption, “Bulletproof vest? Nah, it’s all muscle.”
In truth, Guzman is a married father who only got to know of the ad after his friends—and wife—enquired about “why his photograph was on a dating service advertisement,” to which he responded that he had no idea.
Guzman’s attorney says the officer has been left “furious” by the misappropriation. The law enforcement officer reached out to NSI Holdings requesting for a takedown of the picture, but the company said it would only do so after he verified his identity, as detailed by a lawsuit filed in the US District Court in Miami.
Unfortunately, the photo was still up even after Guzman presented proof of his identity.
“Defendant’s use of plaintiff’s image, likeness and/or identity in connection with a dating service impugns plaintiff’s character, embarrasses him, and suggests—falsely—that he, a married person, is presently dating and seeking out other partners,” the filing reads.
NSI Holdings has requested for the suit to be dismissed, claiming that the photo was indeed posted by “Guzman or someone close to him.”
“He is a married man and respected member of his community who has been caught with a profile on an online dating website,” it argues, adding that the photo was deleted days after his request.
