Kim Kardashian Announces Name To Replace Her Controversial ‘Kimono’ Shapewear
By Izza Sofia, 27 Aug 2019
Following backlash from the naming of her new shapewear line, Kim Kardashian has announced a rebrand of the collection formerly known as Kimono.
Kardashian was called out for cultural appropriation over the initial name, which is in reference to a traditional Japanese garment. The criticism spread so far that it even reached the mayor of Kyoto, Japan, who reached out and urged her to rename the line.
While previously hesitant, Kardashian heeded his words and decided to drop the ‘Kimono’ name. “After much thought and consideration, I’m excited to launch SKIMS Solutionwear,” she revealed on Twitter.
Prior to the rebrand, the socialite was tasked with the challenge of finding suitable ways to cover the old logo, as it was already printed on two million garments. She eventually settled on covering the wordmarks with rectangular strips of fabric.
The first collection from the new brand is set to finally drop on 10 September. According to Kardashian, the pieces “will be the closet thing to someone’s skin” as they are made with “soft and supportive fabrics” that “accentuate the best parts” of one’s body.
