Viral Deepfake App That Places Your Face Over Celebs’ Is Eerie On So Many Levels
By Izza Sofia, 03 Sep 2019
A Chinese deepfake app that allows you to place your face into different scenes of movies is going viral.
According to Bloomberg, the face-swapping app called Zao has been topping app store charts after it was first released last Friday. However, its striking ability to replace faces with ease isn’t the scariest bit—the creators of the app are currently receiving heavy criticism as it has been found to breach user privacy.
Chinese media outlet RADII reports that using Zao is quite straightforward. Users simply need to take a selfie and then paste the image over pre-selected footage.
Twitter user Allan Xia has demonstrated this in a 30-second clip, shown below, replacing Leonardo DiCaprio in scenes from different movies with a photo of himself. The result is pretty eerie, yet convincing at the same time.
In case you haven't heard, #ZAO is a Chinese app which completely blew up since Friday. Best application of 'Deepfake'-style AI facial replacement I've ever seen.— Allan Xia (@AllanXia) September 1, 2019
