A group of thieves wielding sledgehammers broke into Perth’s two Apple Stores on Tuesday, thinking they had struck gold after making off with about A$300,000 (US$203,000) worth of iPhones. Alas, things were not meant to be.
A first attempt to smash into the city’s flagship location and loot its goods was foiled, as the gang was “disturbed” by a passing taxi, forcing them to leave empty-handed, per a report by ABC Australia.
In less than an hour, six armed burglars threatened security personnel at Garden City Shopping Centre in Booragoon and broke and entered into the mall’s Apple Store.
According to Detective Senior Constable Matt Whelan, via 7NEWS.com.au, Apple is aware of the exact devices that have been stolen, so the phones now cannot be unlocked or restored to factory settings.
As the iPhones are unusable, they are therefore useless on the black market, so the burglars made all that effort for nothing.
CCTV footage of the thefts can be found below.
