The Australian version of the US news show, 60 Minutes, released its latest trailer on a special on Meghan Markle. The footage took heat for using harsh language against the Duchess of Sussex.
Right off the bat, the tweet accompanied with the clip reads, “From adored to insufferable in less than a year. What went wrong for Meghan and how it affects hubby Harry… Inside a Royal crisis.”
The segment titled #Megxit features Katie Hopkins, who is notorious for her controversial comments. Self-proclaimed as the “biggest b*tch in Britain,” Hopkins enraged many internet users with what she had to say about Markle’s personality and appearance.
#Megxit! How Meghan Markle lost her sparkle. From adored to insufferable in less than a year. What went wrong for Meghan, and how it affects hubby Harry. SUNDAY on #60Mins: Inside a Royal crisis. Hopkins described Markle as “the biggest hypocrite there is” and that she is “a no one” who “wears bad clothes.”
The video also included the duchess’ then-friend labeling her as “manipulating.” The clip did not sit right with the masses, with Twitter users accusing the show of insinuating a racist image of Markle and berating her unfairly.
I wonder which producer at @60min came into work one day and said to the assembled team: "You know who would give a thoughtful and totally-not-racist perspective on Meghan Markle? Notable non-racist Katie Hopkins."— Charlotte Clymer🏳️🌈 (@cmclymer) September 5, 2019
One of Markle’s celebrity friend, Mia Farrow, came in her defense, stating that the duchess is an “intelligent, compassionate, beautiful woman.” She also lambasted 60 Minutes Australia for being “trashy.”
Shame on you for airing this trash. - Great Britain is fortunate to have this intelligent, compassionate, beautiful woman in the Royal Family. In her, Prince Harry has found happiness and for that we rejoice.— Mia Farrow (@MiaFarrow) September 5, 2019
Markle has been heavily criticized since she started dating Prince Harry in 2016. The situation worsened to the point Kensington Palace had to issue a statement on behalf of Prince Harry to simmer down the distasteful treatment against Markle.
60 mins Australia interviewed Katie Hopkins, a woman who is unquestionably racist and xenophobic, for this “story” about the first black member of the Royal Family.— Yashar Ali 🐘 (@yashar) September 5, 2019
Members of the Royal Family are not above criticism, but this racist hit piece is an absolute disgrace https://t.co/mon4LcR5jC
However, not everyone felt that the clip featuring Hopkins was racist. Some just felt it was harsh.
Markle has certainly made some seriously dumb moves, alienating the public with obviously hypocritical actions. That's all on her, she should know better. Not sure about this TV segment, perhaps a little harsh, but hardly racist.— By the numbers (@TheRealFixNow) September 5, 2019
Another celebrity, Jameela Jamil, defended Markle claiming that the coverage was “trash entertainment,” adding that people of color were almost nowhere to be found in the clip. She then pointed the finger at Prince Andrew and his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier and convicted sex offender. Other felt the same sentiment.
If you have to bring in Katie Hopkins, you’re scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel, So immediately we can dismiss this trash “entertainment” as *any* form of “journalism.” Are there any POC in this doc other than the woman being bullied? WHERE’S THE DOC ON ANDREW THE PEDO? https://t.co/wXqJ7HTe6c— Jameela Jamil 🌈 (@jameelajamil) September 5, 2019
This is the bit about the Royal Family you want to focus on, @60mins? There is an *actual* story in Prince Andrew & Epstein, but God forbid you investigate that instead of adding to racist hysteria around Meghan.— Verushka, an editor (@SydneyEditor1) September 5, 2019
