Seeing as how the “GIF” VS “JIF” war is still going on, it’s evident that people are unwavering about the ways they call things. So, it was certainly several years too late when PlayStation decided to correct gamers on the official name of one of the ‘DualShock’ controllers’ buttons.
On Twitter, PlayStation UK revealed that the actual button names as: ‘Triangle’; ‘Circle’; ‘Square’; ‘Cross’.

If Cross is called X (it's not), then what are you calling Circle?🤔 https://t.co/dvQ19duemW
Yes, you read that right—it says “Cross,” not “X.”
“If ‘Cross’ is called ‘X’ (i’'s not), then what are you calling ‘Circle’?” PlayStation UK wrote, mocking players with a SpongeBob Squarepants meme.

Suffice to say, social media users aren’t agreeing with the labeling. “This is like when the guy who invented the GIF [insisted] on everyone saying it in a weird way against public consensus. Embarrassing,” writes one Twitter user. “It’s actually a plus sign rotated 45 degrees,” another jokes.
Unfortunately for those adamant that the button is known as ‘X’, video game fan account Direct-Feed Games has dug out a press release from 2013, where the action button is referred to as “Cross.”

One Twitter user has even distinguished between the characteristics of a cross and the letter X, describing that the edges of a cross create a square, while the letter X forms a rectangle. Additionally, the “sticks” of a cross are equal distance apart, while those of the letter X are not.
Because this debate grinds my gears, I'll finish it once and for all:— nєrσ αgєnt crímsσn (@SIECrimson) September 5, 2019
- Crosses have the same distance between each stick.
- Crosses form a square.
- Exes don't have the same distance between each stick.
- Exes form a rectangle.

The official PlayStation Twitter account also jumped in on the debate, and started a poll to determine which name most have pledged allegiance to. Thus far, the “ex” pronunciation surpasses all others with an 81-percent score, so, majority wins?
