Lamborghini is the next carmaker to enlist the electric car troop with its latest reveal, ‘Sian’, at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year.
As the company’s first step into hybrid tech production, the car still has its screeching V12 engine. This feature is hidden beneath the car’s sleek bodywork.
The meaning behind ‘Sian’ stands for “flash of lightning” in the Bolognese dialect, titled aptly to reflect the company’s first real hybrid performance car.
The design team retained the exclusive ‘Gandini’ line with its wedge-like shape, and incorporated elements from predecessors like the 2017 ‘Terzo Millennio’ concept and the ‘Countach’.
The Y-shaped headlights and carbon fiber splitter take inspiration from the EV concept of two years ago. In the back, the car sports active wing lifts. “63” is embellished in the pair of vertical winglets, a nod to the birth year of the automaker.
From the center to the roof, the hybird super sports car features a transparent ‘Peroscopio’ glass panel. It also employs active cooling vanes at the rear that react to the temperature by releasing extra airflow at a certain range.
The main interior differences can be seen in its elegant center console and the portrait touchscreen, firstly featured in the ‘Huracan EVO’. The leather upholstery is made by Italian furniture company Poltrana Frau and for the first time, Lamborghini has integrated 3D-printed parts in its car.
This Lambo is hybridized with the use of supercapacitors rather than the accustomed lithium-ion battery pack. The company details that this method is three times lighter and three times as powerful as the typical Li-Ion cells. The storage system can be charged and discharged with the same amount of power as well, allowing the electric boost to recuperate immediately whenever the car brakes.
The supercapacitor uses a 48v 34bhp e-motor mounted in the center of the car. It is merged with the gearbox for swifter response. ‘Sian’ can still be reversed and parked on the solely with e-power. Giving the car extra verve, the e-motor also fills in the split-second power gaps made by gear changes.
The electric power is Lamborghini’s highest output ever with 6.5 litres creating 774bhp. This is 15bhp more than the one in the ‘Aventador SVJ’ at 8500rpm. This will be Lamborghini’s “most powerful” car ever with a total power output of 808bhp.
The 0-62mph launch sprint is set in under 2.8 seconds and the ‘Sian’ can hit up to 218mph. In-gear acceleration has taken a huge leap with the ‘traction force’ as Lamborghini claimed improvements in 10% between 19 snd 37mph and 20% between 44 and 75mph, 1.2 seconds faster than the ‘Aventador SVJ’.
To pay tribute to Lamborghini’s birth in 1963, there are only 63 of these hyper cars being made and they have all been sold.
Customers of the ‘Sian’ underwent a personalization process, giving the model their own design inputs, to make each car unique to its owner. The ‘Sian’ is expected to cost at least £400,000 (US$493,160).
