US president Donald Trump has been campaigning for incandescent lighting for awhile, preferring them to energy-saving alternatives.
While energy-efficient light bulbs do have their pros and cons, Trump might also have a personal issue against them. At the GOP House Retreat Dinner in Baltimore on Thursday, POTUS described that they were responsible for his “orange” complexion.
“People said what’s with the light bulb?” Trump recounted. “I said here’s the story… I looked at it, the bulb that we’re being forced to use, number one to me—most importantly—the light’s no good. I always look orange. And so do you. The light is the worst.”
He also said at a rally in Fatyetteville, North Carolina last Monday that he was “not a vain person… but I look better under an incandescent light than these crazy lights that are beaming down.”
Previously, a White House official attributed Trump’s unique skin tone to “good genes,” though many believe he uses a fake tan.
The Department of Energy details that energy-efficient lighting consumes 25-percent to 80-percent less energy than traditional incandescents, and is able to last three to 25 times longer. The lamps are also recyclable, and are not made for discarding in the trash.
However, Trump does have a few notable reasons for advocating the less green option, aside from the unflattering glow it supposedly creates. On Thursday, he stressed that compact fluorescent bulbs “have warnings. If it breaks, it’s considered a hazardous waste side. It’s gasses inside.”
The gasses in reference are argon gas and mercury vapor, which are present in small amounts in compact fluorescent lighting. Exposure to mercury could result in a loss of peripheral vision, impairment of speech, hearing or walking, a weakening of muscles and a lack of coordination of movements. When inhaled, argon can irritate or burn the skin and eyes.
