Clothing retailer Tillys has been criticized for selling a stereotypical, Asian-inspired t-shirt design in its stores.
NBC’s Fresno, California-based YourCentralValley.com was tipped off about the apparel by an Asian American Studies lecturer at California State University, who thought the design was offensive.
The t-shirt features an illustration of the Laughing Buddha, who is depicted as a gluttonous character with Chinese takeout on his lap. The graphic also arrives with a couple of puns, like “wok in, wok out” and “chin tu fat.”
A customer who was interviewed by the network also found the design insulting, explaining that her children are part-Japanese.
A Tillys representative told YourCentralValley.com that they had “no comment” about the issue.
The t-shirt, produced under the brand Blue Crown, seems to have been taken off Tillys’ online store. A variation of the garment appears to have been sold on Amazon as well, as indicated by a complaint on Twitter in April.
