Spot, the robot dog believed to have inspired the ‘Metalhead’ episode on Black Mirror, has hit the market.
Unlike the monsters depicted in Netflix’s dystopian sci-fi series, though, Spot is a good boy. Aside from being able to bop to Uptown Funk like a pro, it’s built to accomplish industrial tasks autonomously.
Spot can reach places “wheeled robots cannot,” its inventor Boston Dynamics explains, and is able to carry weighted objects more easily than aerial drones, withstand dusty and wet environments, and has 360° vision.
So, how much is that doggy in the window? Apparently, a good fortune. According to IEEE Spectrum, Spot could be as expensive as a luxury car. It’s unfortunately also not available to consumers, and is currently being targeted at businesses based in industrial environments.
Marc Raibert, CEO of Boston Dynamics, tells IEEE Spectrum that witnessing the company’s robots transition from the lab to be “hardened for work out in the field” has been a “milestone.”
While Spot isn’t readily purchasable by the masses, at least you can enjoy the commercial Boston Dynamics has just put out.
