Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been making waves on the internet with hopes to shed light on climate change. On Monday, the 16-year-old gave an emotional speech at the United Nations climate summit.
In her speech, she expressed sadness and anger to how she should not be on stage, but in school, as she pointed fingers at world leaders for robbing her “dreams” and “childhood” with their “empty promises.”
With tears in her eyes, the teenager continued to read from a piece of paper, detailing, “People are suffering, people are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are at the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”
She went on to emphasize the threat of global warming and how world leaders might be failing to act accordingly to the gravity of the situation.
As the video of Thunberg’s speech went viral on Twitter, US president Donald Trump responded with the statement, “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!” in a tweet that included the video of her speech.
Many assumed Trump was “trolling,” or even mocking the teenage climate change activist, but she turned the tables by using Trump’s words on her Twitter bio, which now reads, “A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future.”
Donald Trump’s administration took a step down from its environmental protection initiatives as it withdrew the US from the Paris climate accord. Although Trump was not expected to attend the event, he appeared at the event for around 10 minutes after Thunberg’s speech.
