Virgil Abloh takes on everyday life and adds his spin to the 15-piece collection he designed for IKEA. The highly-anticipated collection will hit stores on 1 November 2019.
Named MARKERAD, which stands for “clear-cut” or “pronounced” in Swedish, the collection brings hype to homeware with Abloh’s golden touch. The capsule’s prices will be made affordable so his pieces are available to street fashion fans from all walks of life.
Abloh reinvents norms as he takes the simple IKEA receipt, often chucked away, as inspiration, transforming it into a giant rug.
To the designer and artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear, the receipt is a “trademark in itself” for IKEA, and can be placed anywhere from the floor to the wall.
The range will also spotlight the iconic quotation mark aesthetic of Abloh’s label, Off-White, which is reflected on a collaborative “SCULPTURE” shopping bag available in two sizes. A medium version is priced at US$19.99, while a larger one reminiscent of IKEA’s FRAKTA carrier costs US$24.99.
Further, a clock from the collection is splashed with the word “TEMPORARY” on its see-through face, casting a shadow that appears differently depending on the angle the sun is shining from. The collection also includes a US$249 dark green rug resembling damp grass with the text, “WET GRASS.”
Abloh explains, “There’s always an underlying message in my creations. A little bit of irony—and a human connection.”
More “traditional” elements can be found in a US$399 table, US$149 chair made out of light beechwood, US$199 glass door cabinet, and US$199 bed with a US$130 cover, all of which are inspired by 1950s Scandinavian modernistic designs.
IKEA announced that the limited edition items will go on sale on 1 November 2019 at 10am, wherever you may be. It has already made preparations to allow customers to queue in front of stores from 7am. However, camping and overnight parking is not allowed.
