It seems like two American tourists thought “holding up” the Leaning Tower of Pisa was too mainstream, as they were found to have carved one of their names on the marble monument.
Italian news networks report that the brothers, both medical doctors, were arrested earlier this month for engraving the name “Jeffy” on the black marble of the cultural landmark using a coin, and then posing with the writing for a selfie.
Their antics were noticed by another tourist, who informed a security guard of the misbehavior.
The brothers, aged 35 and 38, were arrested for breaching Article 121 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and are now charged for causing aggravated damage to a monument of historic and cultural significance.
However, they defended themselves, telling the carabinieri that they didn’t think the move was “serious,” since other names can be found inscribed on the tower.
