A chemistry teacher at West High School in Iowa, identified as Matt Baish, was put on administrative leave after joking about using a “sniper rifle” on Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg in a Facebook post.
Television network KWWL reported on Friday that the Waterloo Community School District has placed the teacher on leave in regards to a pending investigation on the comment he had posted on Facebook.
One of Baish’s former students, Mason Severson, first asked around on 2 October 2019 if anybody was attending the climate strike rally that was planned to take place in Iowa City. The post featured a linked article that included an image of the 16-year-old.
Baish reportedly replied, “Don’t have my sniper rifle.”
Severson then related that the comment “was insensitive and taken too far.” The 27-year-old pre-med student from the University of Northern Iowa felt that the remark was not to be taken trivially as “it wasn’t baseless” but “irrefutably vile and wrong.”
On Friday, Thunberg attended the rally and encouraged those who showed up to “never give up.”
She expressed the need to persevere and continue striving for the cause because giving up was “simply not an option.”
While Thunberg is being applauded for speaking out about climate change, she has also been facing criticism from some internet users, including President Donald Trump.
Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin also labeled the activist as being “ill-informed.”
