Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will join Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss for next series in the Matrix franchise, according to Variety.
Abdul-Mateen is known for his breakout role in Aquaman, when he starred as villain Black Manta. The actor will also be featured in the next edition of British sci-fi series Black Mirror.
Variety reported that the director of the fourth sequel, Lana Wachowski, met potential cast members in the past week and finally narrowed down Abdul-Mateen to fill in the shoes of one of the sequel’s lead roles.
Director Wachowski will also produce the film with Grant Hill, with the Matrix 4 script being written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Michell.
The film is expected to kick off production in 2020, and will be produced and globally distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.
As of now, rumors have spread that the next Matrix film will feature a young Morpheus. However, it remains to be known if Abdul-Mateen will take on that role.
Previously, Reeves shared that he had read the script for the sequel and was “absolutely excited” about it.
