With the abundance of plastic left in the sea, Coca-Cola chose a different approach from companies that are striving to go plastic-free.
The beverage giant has produced its first batch of sample Coca-Cola bottles made out of marine plastics recovered from the Mediterranean Sea and beaches.
The experiment aims to prove that “low quality” ocean debris can be transformed into high-quality materials for food and drink packaging using “enhanced recycling” technologies.
About 300 bottles have been manufactured from this test, each containing 25-percent recycled marine letter. “A small step for now, but the technology behind it has big potential,” Coca-Cola explains in a press release.
To produce the bottles, Coca-Cola used various techniques to break down components of plastic and extract impurities “so they can be rebuilt as good as new.”
Although the technology is still in its early stages, the company says the marine debris-constructed plastic bottles are a “proof of concept for what the technology may achieve in time,” and hopes to apply the techniques across its product line once they’re more advanced.
