Carlsberg, which formerly touted itself as “probably the best beer in the world,” will soon probably be the most eco-friendly.
Last week, the brand announced at the C40 World Mayors Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark that it is actively working on developing the world’s first “paper bottle” for beer to reduce its carbon footprint.
The bottle is coined the Green Fibre Bottle, and will be constructed from sustainably-sourced wood fibers, as well as 100-percent bio-based and wholly recyclable.
The pilsner maker has created two prototypes, both of which have inner barriers to store the beer. The first has a thin inner layer of recycled PET polymer, while the other features a 100-percent bio-based PEF polymer. Both designs will undergo a series of tests before Carlsberg determines the more feasible of the two.
The chosen paper bottle will not be endgame, though. It is just one baby step before Carlsberg finds a way to go polymer-free with its future 100-percent bio-based bottles.
Myriam Shingleton, vice president of Carlsberg’s group development division, told CNN Business that fiber bottles are more eco-friendly than glass or aluminum because the material is sustainably-sourced and has a “very low impact on production process.”
Carlsberg hopes to give out “zero” carbon emissions at its breweries, as well as reduce its full-value-chain carbon footprint by 30 percent by 2030. The ambitious move is part of the brand’s Together Towards ZERO sustainability campaign.
Its revised packaging announcement follows that of Coca-Cola, which recently unveiled its first Coke bottle constructed from marine litter.
