These days, forking out under US$700 for a new smartphone is almost unheard of, but Apple—the company that made the US$999 price tag mainstream—now appears to be working on a budget iPhone.
Citing a new research note from reliable tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, MacRumors reports that Apple will soon be unleashing the iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of next year.
While the name of the model isn’t confirmed, it’s expected to be the direct descendant of Apple’s low-end iPhone SE from 2016. The smartphone is believed to be priced from US$399; in contrast, the iPhone 11 costs US$699 and up.
Despite its low price tag, the iPhone SE 2 will reportedly feature some powerful specs. For one, Kuo says it will be packed with the latest A13 chip—the very same one powering this year’s iPhones 11 and 11 Pro. It will additionally have 3GB of RAM, and will come with 64GB and 128GB options.
As with the iPhones 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max, the iPhone SE 2 is believed to arrive without 3D Touch. Instead, it might come with the similar Haptic Touch, where long presses trigger popups that let you perform additional actions like composing new emails from your home screen.
The smartphone is said to feature three color options: Space Gray, Silver and Red. While it is the direct successor of iPhone SE, Kuo anticipates it will look more like the bezelled iPhone 8.
Kuo predicts that the model will be a popular upgrade among iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S owners.
The tech analyst is reputed for his spot-on forecasts, having predicted the radical iPhone X’s specs and other smartphone designs to a T.
