Patrons who visited a McDonald’s location in Massachusetts were left upset after discovering seasonal decals later deemed as “insensitive and racist.”
One customer, Erik Pocock, arrived at the restaurant for a quick bite with his friends, and was greeted with Halloween decorations featuring jack-o’-lanterns, bats, and a spooky tree.
Upon a closer look, he noticed that there was a lifeless black stick figure hanging off a rope from the tree.
Pocock told Today that he and his friends were appalled by the “disgusting and insensitive” sight.
“I can’t believe someone thought it was a good idea,” Pocock said.
Other social media users were also unhappy with the décor, with some likening it to a lynching scene, though some thought it was fine and not a new Halloween aesthetic.
A few Twitter users pointed out that McDonald’s should have been responsible enough to exclude anything possibly viewed as “offensive” to the public.
Pocock told Today that an employee immediately removed the décor as soon as the news crew arrived.

.@McDonalds is apologizing after these Halloween decorations were put up in their North Andover restaurant. Customers we spoke with tonight are split about whether the image is offensive #WCVB pic.twitter.com/wnRfhmV8zP— Matt Reed (@MattReedNews) October 24, 2019

It's not offensive at all!
But because ONE person took a photo and complained....
Okay so when the artist drew this, he didn't have a CLUE that this might be a tad offensive? GTFOH @McDonalds!! Draw a F'g scarecrow, a ghost, a witch, ALL HALLOWEEN related. NOT a man hanging from a tree! Get it together!!!— Mz. 206 (@daisyduckbills) October 29, 2019
Offensive and Racists? No it has no race because it is a silhouette. There is also no specific race that was hung, all races have been.— sselecaF (@1sselecaf) October 24, 2019
That act it is displaying may be grotesque, but it is Halloween.
its history. so is the halloween, its historic and has a lot of culture interwoven in it. the salem witch trials are also history. history is facts and cant be "offensive". only a maoist or a soviet would want to change history / facts or erase them.— mimirussom (@mimirussom) October 30, 2019
Two sides to EVERY story sir. Disturbing image? Yes. Offensive? To some. Racist? Last I checked, white people have been hanged in the past as well.— Ryan Melanaphy (@ryanmelanaphy) October 24, 2019
Definitely not appropriate. Why are we associating Halloween with lynching which obviously this is undoubtedly a display of such an act.— Adnak (@Flavaboyfan) October 25, 2019
Uhhh, Halloween is associated with death in any number of horrible ways - it's the season of gory horror movies after all...— Raptors Florida Fan 🇨🇦🏀🇺🇲 (@ScottDMacLeod) October 25, 2019
