Apple is going with the flow by introducing a blood drop emoji so users can finally have an icon to indicate menstruation.
With the iOS 13.2 update released on Monday, the company rolled out 398 new emojis for a more diverse keyboard. Among emoticons representing accessibility needs and various skin tones is the ‘Drop of Blood’ symbol.
As reported by The Telegraph, the ‘Drop of Blood’ emoji was one of the concepts for period that were submitted to the Unicode Consortium, the regulator of emoji designs around the world.
Nonprofit for girls’ rights Plan International UK had launched a campaign in 2017 for the introduction of a new period emoji so it would be “easier for girls and women to talk about their period with friends, family and colleagues.”
More than 54,000 people voted on their favorite designs, but the winning iteration called ‘Period Pants’ was turned down by the Unicode Consortium. Instead, the organization selected the runner-up, the blood drop emoji.
While activists view the icon as the symbol for menstruation, it appears to be created for versatility. Emojipedia describes the emoji as something to “signify a blood donation, bleeding, injury or menstruation.”
Nevertheless, it is a win for all. “We are thrilled to see the arrival of this long-awaited blood drop emoji, which signals a real breakthrough in the fight against period stigma,” remarks Rose Caldwell, Plan International UK’s chief executive.
