Kris Jenner has been accused of cultural appropriation after she turned up at a Halloween party looking like a Dia de los Muertos skeleton.
Jenner wore a black-and-gold sombrero, a black jacket with oversized gold buttons and black trousers, posing for the camera with a white guitar. Her face was painted like a sugar skull—a look frequently donned by Mexicans for Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, a holiday honoring loved ones who have passed on.
Naturally, social media users were not fans of the look and voiced their frustrations online.
“Dia de los Muertos is a tradition not a costume,” one Instagram user lamented.
Seconding the sentiment, another wrote, “Culture should not be a costume on Halloween.”
Appropriation or tribute? Judge the getup for yourself below.
@KrisJenner Dia De Los Muertos is NOT THE SAME AS HALLOWEEN! It’s a holiday to remember the dead, not a costume you could just throw on. I don’t care if you were trying to go as Coco pic.twitter.com/qz5zTrHqx3— B (@extraharry_) November 1, 2019
I like the Kardashians/Jenners and all, pero did Kris Jenner dress up as a Día de Los Muertos mariachi for Halloween??? pic.twitter.com/hfPgJiX6cb— chinita🇬🇹 (@Savnikauly29) November 1, 2019
Soooo are we gonna talk about how problematic Kris Jenner’s Halloween costume is orrrr???— AF (@annefleming13) November 1, 2019
ok but is nobody gonna talk about kris jenner wearing día de los muertos makeup with full mariachi attire as a costume for halloween...........— 𝖑𝖊𝖆𝖍 (@glowleah) November 1, 2019
My culture is not your costume!! There isn’t a main character in Coco that wears a black Mariachi outfit! Dia De Los Muertos has been celebrated in Mexico and other South American countries for the past 5,000 years! This is disgraceful! SHAME ON YOU!!— Virginia Rodriguez (@Nina_Rodriguez6) November 1, 2019
This isn’t it. Where on earth is there a character like this in coco? If you did skeleton makeup then that would’ve been fine but Sugar skull or catrin makeup is definitely not something you wear as a costume. Is my culture a joke to you? This is cultural appropriation.— 𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐢 🌸☁️ (@kthasthetic) November 2, 2019
WRONG WRONG WRONG. Stop insulting our culture. This is a tradition we uphold, not your next costume. Plain out unacceptable— M Rodriguez (@tia_cammey____) November 2, 2019
