Starbucks’ holiday cups might draw controversy each year, but that hasn’t stopped the Seattle coffee chain from getting experimental for its 2019 festive drinkware.
Christmas came early for design enthusiasts this year, as Starbucks has rolled out four neat holiday cups rooted in typographic and wrapping paper design.
“Typography is used as the main illustrative element for three of the designs, with whole letters playfully rotated for a musical, song-like quality,” the company shares in a press release.
The fourth one is a little safer yet playful, and features green polka dots with the Starbucks siren peeking in some of them. All four arrive with a unifying green stripe at the back, “finishing the cup like a ribbon,” Starbucks adds.
The stakes were high this year. Starbucks’ designers came up with over 50 iterations, and narrowed them down to just four with a color scheme of red, white, and Starbucks green.
Explaining the key concept of the cups, Jen Quotson, vice president of Starbucks Creative, says the company hopes customers will enter Starbucks during the holiday season as if they were “uncovering a present.”
“We came up with this idea of wrapping the stores in holiday joy and wrapping the cups like a gift to our partners and customers,” she details.
