Kim Kardashian Reveals How She Handled Controversy Over ‘Kimono’ Name In KUWTK
By Yimin Huang, 19 Nov 2019
Earlier on, Kim Kardashian was criticized heavily for cultural appropriation after using the name Kimono for her shapewear brand.
On the latest episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kim Kardashian revealed what went down when the controversy attracted global attention. She apparently talked about the issue with Scott Disick, saying that she was accused of cultural appropriation.
Then, she defended herself by saying incredulously, how do others “ever think” she would intend to do something “disrespectful,” according to BuzzFeed News.
She went on to discuss with Disick how much “of a hit” the business would have to suffer for the name change, as “Kimono” has already been used on “hundreds of thousands” of shapewear products. Kardashian was concerned that as much as US$10 million could be lost.
In her testimonial, she insisted that none of the retailers who met up with her said anything about the inappropriate name. However, she admitted that her decision to give it such a name was “foolish” and “ignorant.”
She explained that there were many people who “could have chimed in” warning her about the name, but somehow they “ignorantly” thought it would not be an issue.
Kim Kardashian also called her publicist after receiving the letter from the mayor of Kyoto, and read part of the letter defining Kimono as a “traditional ethnic dress” worn by the Japanese. She emphasized that her brand was about “inclusivity” and not about making anyone “uncomfortable.”
Finally, she met with her team to suggest potential new names, such as “KKW” (“W” for wear), “Kim Barely” and “Skims.” The last name won the popular vote, and satisfied Kardashian as she “loved one-syllable names.” She also found it impactful and decided it was the “right thing to do,” ending the troubling saga.
