Having trouble sleeping is frustrating enough, but the added anxiety of not being able to clock enough hours of shuteye just makes things worse.
If all else fails, you might want to try this simple tip that could soothe your sleep anxiety and ultimately help you catch your forty-winks. Andy Puddicombe, founder of meditation app Headspace, divulges this trick with Cosmopolitan UK—and it doesn’t require you to download the app.
Puddicombe points out that people have this belief that their minds start racing “as soon as we lie on the pillow,” though the truth is “it’s always been racing.” It just seems like you’re swarmed with thoughts when you try to sleep because you’re more tuned into them during moments of rest.
The first step, Puddicombe tells Cosmopolitan UK, is to acknowledge this fact and approach it from this perception. The next is to pick up calming exercises that “slowly bring the mind down.”
One version the expert recommends is similar to the counting sheep method. “It’s all about gentle focused attention,” he explains. To start off, take a few deep breaths “to ground the body,” Puddicombe suggests, before gently counting down from 1,000.
The key isn’t to silence your thoughts, but to shift your focus elsewhere, such as through counting. “By doing that, the mind knows to slow down,” Puddicombe explains.
