Ryan Reynolds is the adman the world needs. Shortly after releasing a commercial that was really three ads rolled into one, the actor has debuted a teaser for upcoming action-comedy Free Guy, of which he is co-producing.
The video starts with Reynolds and his co-stars Lil Rel Howery, Jodie Corner and Joe Keery being interviewed about why they agreed to being in the 20th Century Fox film. As expected, the majority express their gratitude about working with a quality cast and their appreciation for the script.
Reynolds, on the other hand, responds that he was drawn to the blue button-up shirt he has to wear in the film, taking his co-stars by surprise, as it is a run-of-the-mill business shirt.
The scene then switches to an “as seen on TV”-type ad, where he tries to sell the shirt as merchandise. “We’re Disney now, so we’ll have to up our merchandise game,” he explains to the others.
Keery intercepts, saying, “Free Guy isn’t based off a comic book or a video game… No one’s going to buy any merchandise until they’ve seen the films.”
Nevertheless, Reynolds begrudgingly tries his luck and attempts to get viewers to buy a tie and ‘Guy’ name tag, sweetening the deal with a doll—nay, “action figure”—thrown in with the tag; it’s a free Guy.
Free Guy follows a bank teller named Guy (Reynolds), who learns he is a background character in a video game named Free City that is scheduled to go offline. The movie hits theaters in the United States on 3 July 2020.
