Stationary bike company Peloton’s advertisement was ridiculed worldwide for being “misogynistic” and “sexist.” The commercial, titled “The Gift That Gives Back,” saw a man gifting his wife an exercise bike and the spouse regularly reporting to him about her fitness transformation.
Following backlash, a representative from the company told The New York Times that the ad was targeted at the celebration of one’s “fitness and wellness journey.” Though disappointed with the outcome, Peloton’s representative thanked the “outpouring support” from those who understood “what [it was] trying to communicate.”
Ryan Reynold’s brand Aviation Gin has since rushed in to build on the buzz, recruiting actress Monica Ruiz—now known as the “Peloton wife”—for its new campaign.
In the spot, the woman is depicted looking distressed, staring blankly in a bar with her friends. Her husband is not in the scene and her wedding ring is off.
The silence breaks when the character declares, “This gin is really smooth,” to her friends who appear to be walking on eggshells around her. One companion then responds, “Yeah, we can get you another one, if you like,” while the other adds, "You're safe here.”
The clip hints at the “Peloton wife” leaving her “sexist” husband as the three of them toast to “new beginnings.” To add a little banter, in the end, one of the friends says, “You look great, by the way.”
Reynolds posted the clip on Twitter with the caption, “Exercise bike not included.”
