Peloton’s name might be tarnished with recollections of its viral ad for a long while. The controversial festive commercial, which portrays a woman who gets her husband’s approval by sharing her fitness progress after using the exercise bike he gifted her for Christmas, has been criticized worldwide for featuring “sexist” undertones.
The actress in the spot, Monica Ruiz, has since revealed to the TODAY show that she believes her facial expressions were largely at fault for the backlash.
“Honestly, I think it was just my face,” Ruiz shared on Thursday, as the internet had zeroed in on the worried look on her face.
“My eyebrows look… worried, I guess,” she added, deducing that this was why people thought she looked “scared.”
After outcry from the internet over Peloton’s commercial, Ruiz was placed under the spotlight a second time as she was hired by Ryan Reynolds’ Aviation Gin label to star in his commercial.
She previously expressed feeling uncomfortable about the negative attention, and thanked Reynolds for helping her “find some humor” in the incident.
Reynolds explained that he knew how “alienating” it could be to be placed in a project that received unwanted reception, and thus reached out to Ruiz while being respectful of “any reservations she might have had.”
