As the numerous optical illusions that blow the internet’s minds have proven, seeing isn’t always believing.
Just when you thought nothing can surprise you anymore, the Best Illusion of the Year Contest has presented its selection of mind-tripping mirages from 2019.
Scroll down to check out the top three illusions of this year, and view all 10 shortlisted visuals here.
The Rotating Circles Illusion by Ryan E.B. Mruczek and Gideon Paul Caplovitz (third place)
Here, the circle in the middle retains its position throughout the animation. However, it doesn’t seem to be the case when more circles are added into the picture. While the central circle rotates on the spot, it appears as if it is being “pulled and distorted” horizontally and vertically when you fixate on the white dot. Your perception reverts when you focus on the central circle again.
Change the Color by Haruaki Fukuda (second place)
The colors in this illusion “change” depending on whether you’re looking at it downward or sideways. When your eyes navigate the visual from the top to its bottom, you’ll see red and green dots. Glance at it from the left to right and the dots turn yellow.
Dual Axis Illusion by Frank Force (first place)
The winning illusion is the ultimate all-rounder, as the Greek ichthys fish-like symbol appears to revolve around the horizontal and vertical axis simultaneously: leftward, rightward, upward and downward.
