You might want to check your surroundings the next time you use a dressing room. Within three days, two women have reported being recorded while trying out new outfits, with both incidents taking place in Forever 21 locations.
On Saturday, a Twitter user by the name of Kate shared footage of a person furtively recording her in her stall by laying a pair of pants on the floor and having his phone peek out of a pocket.
“It is so sad that I need to make this point, but please girls, check your surroundings when you change in stores,” she tweeted. “I was filmed changing in Forever 21 today. It appears he was filming for a while before I noticed,” she continued. The customer said the incident took place at the outlet in Rockaway Townsquare in New Jersey.
In a follow-up post, the social media user shared a mirror selfie with the phone pointed toward her direction. She also shared her concerns that the same person could have been recording “other (potentially underage) girls” that day.
According to Kate, local police are currently investigating the matter, and the man stands to get caught as “he paid with card.”
A similar affair occurred just two days before at Baybrook Mall in Friendswood, Texas. The Daily Dot reported that another Twitter user, whose account has since been made private, also shared a video of a man slyly filming her outside her dressing room. The suspect had pretended to tie his shoe, in which his phone was propped up.
“Ladies! Beware of your surroundings!” the woman tweeted. “This man was recording me changing clothes in a dressing room at Forever 21. We told the employees, and another girl overheard and said he did the same thing to her.”
“Two other people got a full description of him and we reported it,” she added.
Unfortunately, both women’s concerns were bashed by internet users, some of whom thought they were faking the violations of privacy for drama.
“You never know how you [would] react in shock,” Kate explained. “I got intensely victim-shamed by security with the same statements, too.”
The other woman detailed that she couldn’t ascertain if she was being recorded due to the shock. “I didn’t feel like I had to jump right away to go after him, but I still recorded it as precuation,” she said. “For everyone saying I should have hit him with the door, it pulls inward [and] not outward.”
Thankfully, support also poured in for the women. “We’re programmed to doubt our instincts/intuition,” one replied. “I completely understand your reaction.”
“It’s classic victim-blaming and why so many victims don’t come forward,” another defended. “You did nothing wrong.”

here you can clearly see his camera pointing at me. he was in the stall for over an hour, likely filming other (potentially underage) girls. luckily we have his face and he paid with card. pic.twitter.com/Gx8j9jnSg5— kate (@keorlowski) December 27, 2019
and to anyone responding how you would have reacted, that's fine and all and i thought the same seeing other videos like this--you NEVER know how you react in shock. i got intensely victim blamed by security with the same statements, too.— kate (@keorlowski) December 29, 2019
I’m so sorry this happened to you! No one should ever be victimized ever! I hope they catch the sicko! Proud of you for putting your story out there and Pay no mind to the nay sayers! You were brave and reacted the right way, otherwise he would have continued doing this !— Lisa C (@JrzyItaliana) December 29, 2019
It’s sad that females can’t go anywhere in peace in general. They always have to look over their shoulders. Like going anywhere alone, is so dangerous now. It’s sad because this hit close to home since it’s at baybrook. But it’s happening everywhere which is the saddest part.— D. (@DavidDo99) December 27, 2019
You handled this really well people always think they’re gonna jump into action but you have no idea what that guy could do. I’m sorry this happened :(— christmas carol (@venmo4feet) December 27, 2019
