The folks behind the Twitter account for a video game called Conflict Of Nations: World War 3 royally messed up by leveraging on the tension between US and Iran. Lately, the media has been brimming with news on the arising conflict between the two countries.
Soon, users began creating memes, which insinuated various scenarios of an impending “World War 3.” With that, Conflict Of Nations: World War 3 took the opportunity to promote the PC game by tweeting, “Iran starting World War 3? Simulate any #WWIII scenario you can think of in Conflict of Nations right now!”
The post left a bad taste in several users’ mouths as they began retaliating to the tweet. “Well, this is the dumbest marketing I had ever seen,” one user summed up how many felt while another gets real about the post, “Bad timing. We're a little sensitive about recent events, on the western side of the Pond!”
Despite the backlash, the post is still up, leaving many to wonder if the company is soaking up the notoriety. Though it is not a verified Twitter account, Business Insider claims it to be the official account.
The free-to-play PC game on Steam allows players to strategically battle armed forces of nations, build their military capabilities, uncover high tech and engage in foreign diplomacy.
