As an annual project, Shutterstock recreates the posters of Oscar-nominated films in the distinct styles of famous pop artists, bringing to light its growing collection of over 300 million resources.
The 92nd Academy Awards’ best picture nominees span “depressed divorcées and supportive sisters to action heroes and comic book villains,” serving as a “surplus of inspiration” for Shutterstock’s in-house creatives in its Oscar Pop! series, explains Mike McCabe, VP, Creative at Shutterstock.
This is in hopes that users will gain fresh perspectives about how the platform’s visuals can be “recombined” to create wholly new imagery. Here, the artworks mirror the diverse styles of renowned artists ranging from classic to contemporary and minimalist to chaotic.
This year’s reimagined posters draw inspiration from the pensive imagery of David Hockney, eye-popping oversaturated hues of Yayoi Kusama, gritty yet candy-like visuals of Takashi Murakami, and more.
The full collection of resources used for this year’s Oscar Pop! artworks can be found here. Read about the muses and creation processes behind the posters on Shutterstock’s blog post, and see how best picture nominees have been given the pop art twist after the scroll.
