Do dreams mean anything? According to psychotherapist Matthew Bowes, contemporary science is divided about the psychology behind them. “There are those that believe dreams have no meaning, and at the furthest extreme are simply random brain detritus,” Bowes told Refinery29.
However, there are also those who maintain that dreams are essential to “emotional, physical and mental wellbeing,” as they enable the brain to “process trauma, gain self-awareness and find the answers” to everyday dilemmas.
Whether you’re a believer or not, Bowes has analyzed some common dreams and explained what they could stand for. Check out what some of them might mean, and view the full rundown to decipher more common dreams.
Being chased
Waking up terrified after being chased in your dreams could hint at some lingering issues that need to be dealt with. The level of fright could differ from person to person, and range in accordance with the situation you’re facing in real life. “Perhaps you’ve been risk-avoidant, or you’ve held back on confronting something which is uncomfortable or frightening,” Bowes detailed.
Getting fired from your job
This could be completely unrelated to work, especially if you’re doing well in your career. Bowes deduced that this could signify “the balance of power in a significant relationship and a deep-rooted fear that the relationship will come to an end.” You might be facing imposter syndrome at work, or probably have to maintain the balance of a particular relationship.
Flying high
According to Bowes, dreaming of flying could be directly linked to feeling liberated in life, mirroring the “sense that anything is possible.” This is the best time for you to soak in the positive vibes and pick up something to upgrade yourself. Whether a new hobby or a business venture, it’s your call. However, on the other side of the spectrum, it could also mean that “you’re not being grounded about a certain situation.”
Teeth falling out
Did you just turn a year older? Bowes surmised that dreams about teeth falling out are often tied with “aging and the perception that strength, vitality, and power have been lost.” So, it’s better to reconcile with the fact that you’re only going to get older, but that’s all right because you are going to age like fine wine.
Being late for something
This simply means you are “running out of time to achieve a goal,” in the words of Bowes. So, take some time to reevaluate what you are trying to accomplish, and manage your time to get it done. Sometimes, the timelines you set for your goals could be influenced by societal expectations. That is why it’s important to remember you are allowed to lead your life on your own terms, without racing anyone else.
