IKEA is recalling the three-drawer KULLEN dresser over a risk that it could tip over and cause “death or serious injuries to children.” The recall was made on Wednesday by the Swedish giant and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
According to the CPSC, the KULLEN chest is unstable if not securely anchored to the wall. There have been six reports of tip-over incidents involving KULLEN drawers that were not safely attached against the wall, including one that resulted in a minor cut and another with minor cuts and bruises.
A total of about 820,000 units are affected, and customers who have already purchased the dresser are asked to stop using it immediately if it isn’t properly secured to a wall. They can also order a wall anchoring kit from IKEA or get a full refund by taking the product to a store or arranging a pickup.
The recall shortly follows IKEA’s agreement a couple of months back to pay a family US$46 million after their child died from another model of dresser tipping over him in 2017.
IKEA updated the design to prevent future accidents, but it appears that not all of its dressers include the fix.
Consumers are advised to also check the product descriptions of dressers for warnings before buying them. Details for the KULLEN chest read, “WARNING! Prevent tip-over injury or death. Furniture with included restraints must be secured to the wall according to the product’s assembly instructions.”
