Portland-based software engineer Corey Mohler first translated his keen interest in philosophy into a webcomic called Existential Comics back in 2013. Since then, he has been taking on a lighthearted approach to philosophy in comics in order to make the subject a lot more accessible to people despite their academic backgrounds.
Existential Comics have featured over 120 philosophers, and delves into diverse schools of thought, ranging from pre-Socratic to contemporary philosophy. The comic artist attempts to make topics like existentialism, Stoicism, and communism relatable to the masses through hilarious comic strips, which are often sprinkled with references to current daily life struggles, news, and pop culture.
Mohler creates his comics entirely digitally with Gimp on Linux and additional plugins. His current display picture across social media platforms of Existential Comics showcases French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir, who he has vouched as one of his favorite philosophers, alongside another French philosopher, Jean-Paul Sartre.
Below are some of Existential Comics for your viewing pleasure. Find out more about the project on its official website, Twitter and Patreon.
