The Centers For Disease And Prevention Control has announced that homemade masks can be used as the last resort for healthcare workers, although there isn’t any evidence on its protective capabilities.
Senior officials at the CDC are also urging people to protect people around them by wearing cloth face masks, as one in four carriers of COVID-19 might be asymptomatic. The organization even posted a 45-second tutorial to show how people can easily make a face mask at home.
Due to the shortage in medical gears, many independent sellers have begun crafting unique masks to help people cope with the virus crisis.
Fashion designer Batani-Khalfani explained to USA TODAY that customers and healthcare workers have reached out to her to prepare creative masks for them. “If they want to wear masks, they want to wear a mask that looks nice and that’s still protective,” she described.
However, the CDC points out that the most effective way to protect yourself from the virus would be the use of the N95 face masks, though these should be reserved for healthcare professionals due to a lack of supplies.
