NBC has unveiled its updated logo for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in response to the games being pushed to 23 July 2021 due to the coronavirus.
Since using a 2020 logo for an event held in 2021 can be confusing, NBC decided to come up with new branding for the games. Its logo consists of the Tokyo 2020 name in an “elegant script,” complete with Olympic rings underneath it. However, the media outlet added a new line: “202ONE.”
The original branding was designed by MOCEAN, together with illustrators Aya Kotake, Burke Miles, Stanley Ng and Jamie Givens. It is still unclear as to who created the new add-on, and judging by the different typography, it shouldn’t have been the same team who designed it.
Creative Bloq isn’t a fan of the new branding and thinks it is “confusing.” Not only do the visuals clash, but it’s also anyone’s guess how “202ONE” should be pronounced.
The design has also sprung up on Reddit, and Redditors aren’t loving the new branding. “I saw ‘202 ONE’ and was confused,” a user said, while another wrote, “Half my brain says 202 One, while the other half says Twenty Twone.”
Other social media users, however, praise the minimalist look.
While NBC decided to update its version of the Tokyo 2020 logo, the Olympic committee has revealed that it will not touch the official 2020 branding.
I love the 202ONE rebrand for Tokyo.— William (@wjfanch) April 19, 2020
It’s perfection for someone like me who loves minimalist design w blue! pic.twitter.com/ZtNXr8Ulg4
It’s super clean and if they’re going to have to reprint merchandise either way, might as well pick something simple with minimal ink differentiation to limit printing costs!— William (@wjfanch) April 19, 2020
Tokyo 202One is really good marketing. #Olympics— Rachel (@RachTalksSoccer) April 18, 2020
