Media conglomerate ViacomCBS aired an eight-minute-and-46-second video to shed light on racial injustice on the heels of George Floyd’s death.
The ad’s duration was how long Floyd had been suffocating after being pinned down by the knee of Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin, eventually losing his life. The PSA includes a black screen with the sound of breathing as the phrase, “I Can’t Breathe,” flashes after each inhalation. These were the words uttered by Floyd during his last moments.
The spot urges viewers to make a donation to Color Of Change, a nonprofit focused on fighting racism.
ViacomCBS’ channels include BET, MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, Nickelodeon, Paramount Networks, TV Land, CMT, Logo and CBS Sports, which all ran the poignant ad on Tuesday.
For 8 minutes and 46 seconds, we will go dark in tribute to George Floyd. We dedicate this time to the victims of police brutality and the powerful movement fighting for justice. Join @ColorofChange. Text DEMANDS to 55156. #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd pic.twitter.com/qyQ4aUCW9G
