Comme Des Garçons will be dropping a new collection in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The announcement was made by Dover Street Market, run by Comme Des Garçons co-founder Rei Kawakubo and her husband Adrian Joffe. “This is just the first of a stream of activities we are planning for Black Lives Matter, epitomizing our continued commitment to furthering diversity and equality of opportunity within Comme Des Garçons and Dover Street Market, and to listen and learn and do better, in the struggle to obliterate the evil of racism, prejudice and discrimination from the world,” the post reads.
The pieces were meant to be a welcome treat for fans when they visited the Paris and Los Angeles stores after COVID-19 lockdown lifts. However, the recent anti-racism protests have propelled the brand to get on board and support the cause against racial injustice in the US.
Proceeds from the capsule will head towards the Northside Achievement Zone, an organization in Minneapolis that aspires to “end generational poverty and build a culture of achievement in North Minneapolis.” The nonprofit strives to work harder for youths in the city who have witnessed the passing of George Floyd.
The line features jackets, T-shirts and tote bags embossed with positive messages like, “On to the future with good energy,” and “Believe in a better tomorrow,” among other phrases.
The collection is available at Dover Street Market’s recently-reopened Paris store, and will make its way to the Los Angeles store, set to reopen soon. It will also be available online via CDG’s official website.
