Journalist Louis Theroux described his random encounter with Banksy in person back in 2001 before the street artist became famous.
Banksy had shielded his identity for years as he created iconic works raising millions of dollars in the art industry. However, Theroux is one of the few people who had seen him in person.
Theroux shared his “a bit of a random” experience on That Peter Crouch Podcast. The documentarian had attended a Queens Park Rangers football match in 2001 to look out for Crouch, who was known to be a “very useful” new striker back then.
However, he came across Banksy who he described as “a little bit sheepish” and “wasn’t terribly outgoing.” Theroux had a small conversation with him, asking him what he does at that time and Banksy replied, “I’m a street artist.”
Theroux asked his name and he said, “Banksy.” A year later, Banksy rose to fame and whenever someone asked Theroux about Banksy, he would say, “Yeah, I know who he is. We went to a QPR game together!”
