The University of Toronto confirmed that the
TrioMed Active mask by i3 Biomedical Inc. is able to “deactivate” the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes
COVID-19.
The Quebec-based company has created an external surface that can deactivate 99-percent of the virus within minutes, according to its press release. It also announced that it is a first-of-its-kind product in the market.
To prove the credibility of this mask, the gear was tested by researchers at U of T, who
concluded that it works as intended. They also experimented if the virus can be spread from the external layer of the mask as people often adjust their masks with their hands.
The scientists “could not recover any infectious virus from the suspension that had been applied to the mask,” which is good news as it prevents contamination.
“The TrioMed Active Mask is the first and only respiratory protection that is scientifically proven to deactivate the virus causing COVID-19, therefore drastically reducing the risk of contamination for the wearer,” said Pierre Jean Messier, CEO of i3 Biomedical Inc., in a
statement.
He also stated that the company had “spent years and millions of dollars to develop this interactive antimicrobial technology.”
The masks were on
sale for CA$7.29 (US$5.54) in packs of five. However, they are currently sold out.
